Complex Numbers: Sets, Imaginary Unit, Algebraic Form
Chapter 2 β Complex Numbers
Overview
A concise 60βsecond visual walk through the hierarchy of number sets, introducing the imaginary unit and the algebraic form of complex numbers. The dark navy background provides contrast for gold, cyan, magenta and other accent colors. All written elements are now placed in clearly separated containers with consistent padding so that the screen looks tidy and wellβorganized.
Phases
| # | Phase Name | Duration | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Title Intro | ~6β―s | Fade in a small gray βChapterβ―2β inside a thin topβcenter box, then write large bold gold βComplex Numbersβ in a second box directly below it. Add a thin gold underline inside the same box. Hold 1β―s. |
| 2 | Title Exit | ~2β―s | Fade out the whole title block upward. |
| 3 | Number Sets Diagram | ~8β―s | Appear five concentric ellipses (β, β€, β, β, β) from smallest to largest, each in its designated color. Label each at topβright inside its own label box with matchingβcolor symbol. Highlight the outer gold ring (β\β) with a transparent gold fill and fade in a separate caption box βimaginary numbersβ pointing to it. Hold 1.5β―s. |
| 4 | Diagram Exit | ~2β―s | Fade out the entire diagram block. |
| 5 | Imaginary Unit Intro | ~8β―s | Fade in a caption box βWe introduce the imaginary unitβ in white above centre, then write the formula in large gold inside its own centered box below. Pulse the formula briefly larger in cyan before returning to gold. Hold 2β―s. |
| 6 | Unit Exit | ~2β―s | Fade out all elements from the previous segment. |
| 7 | Section Title | ~2β―s | Slide in from the top a dedicated title box containing β2.1 Algebraic Formβ in gold at the top of the screen. |
| 8 | Algebraic Form | ~12β―s | Write the formula centrally inside a boxed area, coloring: white, cyan, gold, magenta. Add a small white caption box ββ to the right of the formula. Draw two separate arrow boxes from below pointing to and with labels βRe = xβ (cyan) and βIm = yβ (magenta). Hold 2β―s. |
| 9 | Form Exit | ~2β―s | Fade out arrows, their label boxes, and the formula box. |
| 10 | Example Showcase | ~10β―s | Show two italic example boxes sideβbyβside: left box β3β―+β―0iβ―=β―3β in cyan with a small subtitle β(real)β below, right box β0β―+β―5iβ―=β―5iβ in magenta with subtitle β(pure imaginary)β below. Each slides in slightly from its side. Hold 2β―s. |
| 11 | Final Fade | ~8β―s | Fade out everything toward the left edge, ending the scene. |

Area Descriptions
| Area | Content | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Top β Chapter Title | Small gray βChapterβ―2β and gold βComplex Numbersβ (Phaseβ―1) | Placed in a padded box; underline inside same box. |
| Top β Section Title | Gold β2.1 Algebraic Formβ (Phaseβ―7) | Slides in from top inside its own box. |
| Left β Diagram Box | Five concentric ellipses with transparentβgold outer fill (Phaseβ―3) | Entire diagram lives inside a dedicated container to keep it separate from surrounding text. |
| Right β Setβlabel Boxes | Individual label boxes for β, β€, β, β, β (Phaseβ―3) | Each label is isolated in its own small box, preventing overlap. |
| Left β Formula Box | (Phaseβ―5) and later (Phaseβ―8) | Centered in its own box; pulse effect applies only to the formula inside the box. |
| Right β Caption Box | βWe introduce the imaginary unitβ, ββ (Phasesβ―5 &β―8) | Separate caption containers aligned with the formula box. |
| Right β Arrow & Text Boxes | Arrows pointing to and with βRe=xβ and βIm=yβ (Phaseβ―8) | Each arrow and its label sit in an individual box for clear spacing. |
| Left β Example Box | Two sideβbyβside example boxes (Phaseβ―10) | Each example (including its subtitle) is inside its own boxed area, sliding in from opposite sides. |
| Bottom | Minor captions (e.g., none in current spec, placeholder for future) | Small white font, appears only if needed. |
Notes
- Background color remains dark navy
#0D0F1A. - All gold elements use a bright gold hue for contrast.
- Transparent gold fill for the outer β ring stays at ~30β―% opacity.
- Pulsing of the formula: scale up to 1.2Γ in cyan for ~0.4β―s then revert.
- Fadeβout directions: upward for the title block, leftward for the final exit.
- Text Separation Rule: Every piece of written content (titles, labels, formulas, captions, subtitles) is placed inside its own rectangular container with consistent padding (β0.15β―in) to guarantee visual separation and organization. Overlapping is avoided by allocating distinct vertical/horizontal slots in the layout diagram.
- No textual narration is required; all information is conveyed visually.
- The entire animation fits within a single Manim
Sceneclass.
